Discussion of Exam Paper
Chosen topic:
03 Transformation - Artists, photographers and filmmakers have used transformation as a means to construct images or investigate ideas, either in-camera or in the post-production stage. John Stezaker used symmetry in is montages. Nigel Henderson transformed images by distorting space and shapes. Abelardo Morell has used a camera obscura to present rotated views of the outside world. Explore appropriate contextual material and respond in your own way.
Definitions -
Transformation - a marked change in form, nature or appearance.
Camera Obscura - a darkened box with a convex lens or aperture for projecting the image of an external object on to a screen inside, a forerunner of the modern camera.
Photographers -
John Stezaker
Above are two pieces of John Stezaker's work. Both images displaying portraiture but with a twist, taking the original image and transforming it into something new. In the bottom image we can see the symmetry that is mentioned in the exam brief as the two faces mirror each other to produce a comical perception of a person. The first image however shows a landscape photograph overlaid onto a portrait, this transforms the meaning of the image. It takes a regular photograph and adds a story behind it.
Nigel Henderson
These pieces of work are by the photographer, Nigel Henderson. As shown above he concentrates on mainly portraiture, transforming peoples faces into something slightly strange and distorted. The first image appears to have the pattern of a brain imposed onto it, bringing colour and originality to the photograph. The second reflects what is mentioned on the exam brief about distorting shape, the way the faces have been put together makes them look distorted and unrealistic showing transformation.
Abelardo Morell
Above is some of Abelardo Morell's work using camera obscura. The images you see above are taken through the camera obscura technique which consequently projects the outside world upside down into a room. The room in which this is done is transformed into an interesting array of colour and intricate pattern, very appealing to the eyes.
I believe that for my approach to this topic I will experimenting with the work of John Stezaker and Abelardo Morell as these two photographers stand out the most to me. I am hoping that as my work progresses I will start to gain a preference to either one of these which I can then take further. The reason I chose these two is because their composition interests me and is very original compared to some photography I have seen before. I like the idea of taking something simple like a room or a face and transforming it into something beautiful and meaningful.
